What is an anchor?
An anchor has their initial level set and locked by the club/community admin.
Their current level will still move based on results, just like everyone else. The difference is that their initial level will not be changed during the processing.
See our Why are initial levels important FAQ for more details.
Why are anchors important?
Anchors provide stability.
An anchored player acts as a fixed reference point within the network of initial levels. During the initial calibration phase for a set of players, initial levels are sensitive to every new match entering into the system. As the network of matches grows the system continually adjusts to refine initial levels.
A few well-selected anchors within a pool of players can provide stability across the entire pool.
Important things to consider when setting anchors
- Be confident in the player’s initial level. You should be confident in the correct initial level of the player
- Set anchors in pairs. Anchor initial partnerships (and ideally closely related opponents). Anchoring only one half of a team can lead to extreme movements for the teammate.
- Choose well connected players. This isn’t essential but players who compete widely across the pool tend to create greater stability.
